The mental battle that a swimmer must face is equally as important as the intense physical training and exercise that they must endure. In order to persevere and surpass the competition in such a demanding sport, the athlete must constantly push themselves to the brink of their abilities, and then push a little more.
To a dedicated swimmer, the thrill of the challenge and the reward of each win is worth all of the sacrifice and strife. The athlete, who faces the question of whether they truly want to meet their personal goals on a daily basis, must weigh their abilities and desires against the cost of each day of work and toil. Only the best and brightest athletes will survive the grueling race to be at the top of their game.
Key Points:
- My only goal in every race is to meet the expectations I have set for myself: to drop time, to improve in any way I can, to validate my hours upon hours of hard work.
- I love being able to push through pain, be a leader, and support my teammates.
- I have learned that success is putting all of myself into something I love, being pushed in ways I never thought I could handle, and refusing to give up despite frustration or resentment.
“For every seemingly constant failure there is a success in between that keeps me going. For every second gained there is a second dropped, a best time set, a goal exceeded.”
