Some activities are beneficial to a wide array of athletes from a diversity of sports. Weight-lifting and cardiovascular exercise can help any athlete improve their strength and endurance, qualities that are not just related to swimming.
While it is always a good idea to keep track of workouts and warm-up beforehand, it is never a good idea to do these workouts to the point of exhaustion. Workouts can be tailored based on available workout equipment. By focusing workouts on different regions of the body, an athlete is able to build strength and build on these strength gains in sport-specific workouts.
However, it is important to cease the strenuous workouts one to two weeks before a competition, in order to recover adequately to perform at a high level.
