Perhaps it seems too simplistic to say that a person can overcome negativity by giving herself positive affirmation. However, according to an article in Women’s Health and Fitness, this technique can truly lead to improvements in self-image and movement toward goals.
Psychologists quoted in the article explain that self-affirming statements spoken to one’s image in a mirror can help with accomplishments as minor as day to day tasks and as major as succeeding in recovery or rehabilitation. Lana Hall, one of the psychologists quoted, said self-affirmation works in part because it involves repeated reminders about the importance of a goal, increasing awareness of opportunities that could lead to achieving it.
But, perhaps even more importantly, Hall points out that the act of self-affirmation can actually change a person’s identity. By seeing oneself as the kind of person who can achieve a goal, a person can create an identity of success.
Key Points:
- Positive affirmations work to help an individual obtain good results in every day tasks or more complex ones.
- It is more likely that you will reach you goal if you do positive affirmations, because it keeps you focused.
- Affirmations can help you find your self, and pay attention to things that may help reach your goal.
