The Benefits of Aqua Aerobics And Misconceptions

Aqua aerobics can provide an exercise routine with multiple benefits. These benefits include cardio work (water provides great resistance training), low impact (water reduces stress on the joints), stress relief (there’s something naturally soothing about being immersed in the natural element that is water), hot weather training (it’s safer AND more pleasant), and variety (tai chi, yoga, kick boxing, and even Zumba can be done in water).

But there are many misconceptions that come with water exercise. Misconceptions include that you have to be a good swimmer – in fact, most water exercise is done standing on the pool floor. Or that it’s only for seniors – many young, serious runners train using water aerobics. Or even that it’s not much of a workout – try “running” underwater and you’ll realize just how tough it is. Once diehard runners have since hung up their shoes for a bathing suit.

Try water aerobics and you’ll find out how much fun it can be!

Key Points:

  • I have gone to some water exercise classes which leave me breathing hard. It took a bit for me to figure out why– resistance.
  • Being in the water provides buoyancy that takes pressure off tired muscles and joints, and it feels wonderful.
  • I think the water plays a part in that relaxation. Our bodies are 60 percent water, so something about working out in the water has the feel of being in a natural element.

“Aqua workouts can provide a solid workout option for people of all ages.”
